SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, Quebec — A fatal vehicle crash in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu has left one man dead and another injured after a vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a ditch in a rural area of the city.
The collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, on Rue Principale near Route 219. According to available reports, a Nissan 350Z traveling in the area veered off the roadway before coming to rest in a ditch that was not easily visible from the road.
The 41-year-old driver died as a result of the collision. A 38-year-old passenger survived the crash but remained trapped inside the damaged vehicle for several hours before being located by a passing motorist the following morning.
Reports indicate that the crash was not immediately discovered. The passenger, who reportedly did not have access to a cellphone, was unable to contact emergency services after the vehicle left the roadway. Emergency crews were eventually notified after a motorist noticed the vehicle in the ditch and contacted authorities.
First responders arrived at the scene Friday morning and located both individuals inside the vehicle. Firefighters used specialized rescue equipment to remove the surviving passenger from the wreckage before he was transported to hospital. His injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
A collision-reconstruction investigator was called to the scene as authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. Rue Principale was temporarily closed between Chemin du Grand-Bernier and Route 219 while investigators gathered evidence and worked to determine what led to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
At this time, authorities have not publicly confirmed the exact cause of the crash. Factors such as road conditions, driver actions or other circumstances may be considered as part of the investigation, but no conclusions should be drawn until officials complete their review.
The incident has drawn attention to the dangers associated with crashes on isolated roadways, where vehicles can leave the visible roadway and remain undiscovered for extended periods. Such situations can create additional risks for occupants who may be unable to immediately seek assistance.
For the family and loved ones of the 41-year-old driver, the crash has resulted in a devastating loss. Meanwhile, the surviving passenger and those close to him continue to recover from the aftermath of an incident that unfolded over several hours before help arrived.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information if significant new details become available regarding the investigation or the circumstances that led to the collision.
The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu community continues to reflect on the tragedy as investigators work to establish a complete account of what happened.
